Do you find yourself in need of a new chandelier for your home but just don’t know where to start? Well, this is your lucky light fixture day, because it turns out that choosing the correct size of luminary for you living space is a lot easier than you think. You don’t need a fancy home decorator or an engineer, but rather a calculator, measuring tape, and determination!
First, start by measuring the height of the ceiling for the room in which you’d like to install the chandelier. Higher ceilings usually require larger fixtures while lower ceilings are going to need a smaller fixture. The general rule of thumb here is 2.5 to 3 inches for every foot of height for a room. So, for example, if you have an 8 foot ceiling height, you’ll want a chandelier that is that between 20 and 24 inches in height.
Next, measure the size of your room. You’ll need this measurement in order to determine the diameter of the chandelier. So, for example, if your room is 14 by 10, you will add those numbers together to get 24. Voila! You need a chandelier that is approximately 24 inches in diameter for this room.
Be aware that you will also want to consider the “visual weight” of a fixture when choosing. Different styles can make a chandelier appear larger or smaller than it actually is.
So now what are you waiting for? Go forth and illuminate the world with your shining knowledge and know-how.
