It’s not unheard of in the pest control business to get a phone call from a homeowner that is…hearing things. That rustling noise in your attic? It might just be a raccoon trying to become your new roommate. The noises coming from your walls? It might just be a mouse colony the size of Nebraska. Right? Well, not so fast.
There are many things that can cause you to hear strange noises in your home. If you hear strange noises it’s not a bad idea to make sure you don’t have a pest infestation, but those noises don’t necessarily mean you’ve got unwanted guests. Here are a few of the things we’ve discovered can cause things to go bump in the night around your home.
If you have trees around you home, then the scratching sounds you hear coming from the roof may just be branches swaying in the wind and rubbing up against your house. You should look at the proximity of trees to your home and make sure the branches are at least 8 to 12 feet away. This will help prevent those crazy noises and prevent real pests from using trees as a way to gain access to your home.
You should also make sure any cables you have running into your home are secured properly to the structure. More than one client has heard a noise they thought might be a pest only to find it’s wires or cables being tugged by the breeze.
Check the Pipes
If you hear clicking or ticking sounds coming from your ceilings or walls, it may not be a signal of home invasion but your pipes instead! The ductwork in your home naturally expands and contracts with the temperature, which can cause strange sounds to be emitted. Water heaters are also sources of strange noises as it warms the water held within.
Animals on the Outside
Sometimes the culprits behind these sounds are actually animals, just not animals actually inside your home. Sounds can travel strangely though the walls of a home and can amplify a sound, making it sound like it’s right next to you when in reality it’s outside.
You shouldn’t hesitate to call in someone to inspect your home for potential problems, and we here at Green Army are always glad to help. But hopefully, some of these things can set your mind at ease about the things you hear going bump in the night! greenarmypest.com
